I was a Senator in Massachusetts from 1877 to 1904. I was part of the Republican party. I Believe myself to be a righteous man who stands up for anyone who is wronged, even if that means standing up to my own party members. I supported things like Women and African American Rights as well as strongly opposed Imperialism. I do not agree with the idea that we need to protect other countries for any reason, especially countries which lie thousands of miles away. I agree with the fact that we need to establish a perfect union but nowhere in the Constitution does it mention anything about governing any people not of American citizenship to be successful in this goal. That is why I believe that we have no right to try to annex the Philippines. There will be no benefit that is displayed in the Constitution that we will gain from the Philippines. All the gain will be solely upon the bases of greed and corruption. All of these points are further extended upon in my essay, Lust For Empire.
